SPRING CREEK, Nev. (News4Utah) – Forest officials say a wildfire burning near Elko threatened state recreational sites and prompted mandatory evacuations in the area.

The “Range 2 Fire” sparked around 9 a.m. Sunday on private land about 20 miles southeast of Elko, but winds helped it spread to Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest.

Lamoile Canyon including all areas, roads, and trails are closed until further notice.

Officials said their initial assessment of the canyon found the recreational sites in the area were “minimally impacted” by the fire.

People traveling in the area are asked to be cautious as fire crews are working in the rea.

The fire is estimated at 8,870 acres and 10 percent contained as of Monday night.
