SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC 4 News) – White males are most likely to perpetrate mass murder.
That’s according to the Utah Domestic Violence Coalition.
“Overwhelmingly, mass shootings are perpetrated by white men,” said Jenn Oxborrow with Utah Domestic Violence Coalition.
“That’s a very similar data point to what we see in domestic violence homicide,” added Oxborrow.
Oxborrow says the violence in Vegas is too similar to what she sees working with domestic violence victims every day.
“88 percent of domestic violence homicides were perpetrated by men, usually white men with a firearm,” said Oxborrow.
The question is, why?
Why, since 1982, have more than 50 percent of mass shootings in our country been carried out by white men?
“We have a high entertainment value that we put on violent video games, we have a lot of violence in our media. And I also think that people don’t often recognize or talk about factors of mental illness,” said Oxborrow.
It’s important, she says, to identify risk factors. And don’t be hesitant to call for help.
“If someone has a large collection of guns; if they’ve been violent or abusive with their own family members; if they’re unemployed, if they’re suicidal; if they have a history of substance use disorder,” said Oxborrow.
“When we see any combination of those risk factors, we need to be reaching out to help.”
