LOS ANGELES, CA – OCTOBER 14: A man is detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), agents on October 14, 2015 in Los Angeles, California. WASHINGTON D.C. (News4Utah)- At rallies across the country protesters are demanding that lawmakers abolish the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency.

Some Democrats in Congress are latching onto the idea– promising to file legislation to eliminate the agency.

“ICE is an agency that is a rogue agency that is out on control with no accountability or transparency,” said Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D- WA

Louisiana Republican Senator John Kennedy calls the criticisms of ICE appalling.

“I mean some of these folks live in ‘La La Land’,” he said. “Last year our ICE agents confiscated about a million pounds of drugs. You want more drugs in our school? Get rid of ICE.”

Kennedy says ICE is also key to fighting human trafficking and removing violent criminals from the country.

He introduced a resolution supporting the agency, but some critics of ICE say the agency under President Trump is unfairly targeting undocumented immigrants who’ve committed no other crime.

“ICE has become a deportation force and are just rounding up people and deporting them,” Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D- NY said.

Kennedy says ICE is simply enforcing the nation’s immigration laws. He calls ICE agents patriots and heroes.

“It’s called the rule of law,” he said.
