SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4 News) – The State Board of Education has proposed new health education standards for elementary and secondary grades. Parents have an opportunity to weigh in during the public comment period ending January 31st.
The new standards would extend health conversations to begin in Kindergarten as opposed to 3rd grade. They focus on six strands: health foundations and predictive factors, mental and emotional health, safety and disease prevention, substance abuse prevention, nutrition, and human development. Each would be taught at an age appropriate level and using curriculum approved by the local school board.
