HERRIMAN CITY (News4Utah)- A private contractor working in Herriman hit a water main Thursday morning, causing flooding to a parking lot and the basements of multiple homes, city officials said.

It happened around 11:30 a.m. near 13400 South 5600 West.

City officials said water gushed from the broken line into a nearby Smith’s parking lot and then down the road into the basement of several homes.

Tami Moody is the Director of Administration and Communications for Herriman City. She said the water caused several windows to break and filled numerous basements with water. Crews from Herriman City were assessing the damage, sandbagging and pumping water from basements in the area, she said.

The water main was shut off around 11:45, but the pipe continued to flow until it was empty.

Moody said a handful of residents in the area and the Walgreens on Rosecrest Road and 134th South are without water for the next six to eight hours as crews work to fix the damage.

This is a developing story. Updates will be posted as they become available.
