BENTONVILLE, Ark. (KNWA) –  The world’s largest retailer wants you to come get your sugar rush on Friday as a tribute to National Donut Day.

Walmart plans to give away 1.2 million full-sized glazed donuts straight from its bakeries, while supplies last.

All Walmarts across the country will be participating in the giveaway.

National Donut Day started in 1938 in Chicago as a tribute to the Salvation Army, with the goal to help those in need during the great depression.

Salvation Army workers would serve donuts and coffee to soldiers in the trenches during World War I, according to The Salvation Army.

During World War II, red cross women volunteers, later known as Donut Dollies, also served donuts to soldiers.
