Utah residents are receiving millions of robocalls a month, number continues to rise

Local News

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4 News) – Half of all mobile calls are expected to be annoying robocalls by 2019, according to a new report. Utah residents are already receiving millions of robocalls a month, about 24 million just in September of this year.

“If you answer the call and you hear a pre-recorded message, that’s a robocall,” according to Whitley Ray with the Better Business Bureau of Utah.

She also says most of them are illegal.

“So, the ones that are illegal, are the ones that are trying to sell you something. The ones that are legal are simply information based only,” said Ray.

The number of robocalls is at an all-time high. In 2017, in Utah, there were 187 million robocalls made. In the nation, 30.5 billion in the same year. Not only are they annoying, but they’re also hard to track, according to officials.

“It’s all automated. They have computers that do things for them, they just kind of random dial numbers. It’s kind of hard to track them because they’re spoofed,” said Ray.

What should you do if you get a call? According to the Better Business Bureau:

  • Don’t answer
  • Don’t say anything or press numbers
  • Hang up as soon as possible

How can you help stop these calls? Experts say they are hard to stop completely, but there are a few steps you can take.

  • Block each number you get a call from
  • Add yourself to FTC’s Do Not Call Registry
  • Download apps on your phone that can block them

As for why they are increasing, experts say they aren’t sure.
