Utah Red Cross workers in Vegas dealing with trauma

Local News

MURRAY (ABC4 Utah) A team from the Utah chapter of the Red Cross is on the ground in Las Vegas setting up family assistance centers.

They left their Murray complex early Monday when news of the shooting tragedy erupted.

“We’re going to try to help people who need help,” says Stan Rosenzweig at the local Red Cross office. His team in Las Vegas is setting up what they call family assistance centers. They will have mental health professionals available to deal with the trauma.

“Think about all the families,” says Rosenzweig. “Think about the kids of those people. They suddenly find that mommy and daddy are not here. They’re really hurting.”

Utahns were lining up Monday to donate blood after the call came out from the Mayor of Las Vegas. The Red Cross parking lot was filled. Phones wouldn’t stop ringing and many blood donors just showed up to help.

Many of them first timers like Bill Kirth. He just got back from Las Vegas Friday night. “So I woke up to these news stories that kind of struck closed to home. I thought I’d better come do this. I’ve never given blood. A little nervous about it, but it turned our okay.”

The Red Cross says you can avoid waiting in line by making an appointment to give blood.
Just call 1-800-REDCROSS.

Stan Rosenzweig expects continued long lines because “the one wonderful thing we know about Utahns is that whenever anything happens, Utahns will come out in force.”
