CAMP WILLIAMS (News4Utah) – Seven Utah National Guard members were honored at Camp Williams tonight for saving the lives of two sister after a traffic accident nearly six years ago.

On June 12, 2012, their unit was training in Manti when they saw Laura and Rebeckah Bishop lose control of a tractor, strike a tree and overturn, pinning the girls underneath.

When the guard members saw the tractor erupt into flames, they sprang into action.

“When we saw the girls underneath, that’s when we knew something bad had happened,” 1st Lt. Johnny Hunt told News4Utah. “When I got the girls I was astonished at the fact they were pretty much unscathed.”

Laura and Rebeckah would be O.K. For their bravery and selflessness, Sergeant 1st Class Brice Avery, Sergeant 1st Class Jason Fowles, Major Shane Day and Sergeant Major Eric Shepherd were awarded the Utah Cross.

Master Sergeant Christopher Branch, 1st Lieutenant Hunt and Staff Sergeant John Christiansen received the Utah Commendation Medal for their heroism in that situation.
