SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC4 News) – A 61-year-old man will spend 90 days in jail for possessing thousands of photos of child pornography.
According to court documents, Ronald David Carter was originally charged with ten counts of second-degree felony sexual exploitation of a minor after police in West Valley City received an SD card that one of his co-workers found in the parking lot of Carter’s place of employment back in July 2018.
Carter’s co-worker told police he located a micro SD card in the parking lot and not knowing who it belonged to, he took it home to preview its contents.
The co-worker found hundreds of images of child pornography as well as dozens of naked pictures of a man in a folder named “Ron”.
The co-worker recognized the man in the photos as Carter, court documents state.
The co-worker took the SD card back to his work and contacted the boss who took the SD card and went to the police station.
A special victims unit detective with West Valley City police reviewed the micro SD card. Records state they found thousands of images depicting child pornography with children performing varying sex acts as well as videos of pre-pubescent children being raped by adult men.
Detectives obtained a search warrant for Carter’s phone and seized it for evidence.
The micro SD card found in the parking lot fit into Carter’s phone.
Investigators said they found the same explicit photographs that were found on the micro SD card on his OneDrive (a cloud service).
Carter accepted a plea deal in which eight counts were dismissed and two counts were reduced to third-degree felony attempted sexual exploitation of a minor.
During court proceedings, a pre-sentence evaluation was requested and on Friday, Carter was sentenced to 90-days jail. The plea deal documents show he was also to be given 36 months probation but court documents did not state an order for probation.
