OREM, Utah (News4Utah) The Florida school shooting shocked a Timpview High School student who transferred from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High last year.
Qing Qing Dayton moved to Orem from Parkland, FL last summer.
“How could this happen? What in the world would a person just do such a thing like this,” Dayton told News4Utah Thursday.
Dayton said could not believe the texts sent from her friends inside a classroom while the gunman opened fire Wednesday.
“We knew that people were actually getting shot. I looked up videos and everything. That’s how I found out it’s actually really bad,“ she said.
The high school senior later learned a friend, Carmen Sentrup, was one of the 17 victims. She died a week before her birthday.
“It’s scary to think she was your friend and she’s gone now.”
Dayton’s family said they also attended LDS church services with 14-year-old Alaina Petty, who passed away, and 17-year-old Madeleine Wilford, who was seriously injured.
Dayton admits she’s still coming to terms with her close connection to one of the deadliest mass shootings in history.
“I could have been in there. I could have been one of them if I was still in that school. It’s kind of shocking to me that if I was still in Florida, I might be one of those victims.”
