WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (ABC4 News) West Valley Police officers found the body of a 52-year-old man after a seven hour standoff Thursday morning.
Police say the man fired a gun while holding a woman hostage near 6462 West 4200 South around 3:00 a.m.
The woman is believed to live at the home and was in a romantic relationship with the unnamed suspect.
Lt. Steve Katz said the woman was able to escape around 4:30 a.m. unharmed.
Officers and SWAT contained the immediate area until 10 a.m. Homeowners were asked to evacuate or shelter in place while they negotiate with the suspect.
“Obviously it concerns us, heightens our concerns for our own safety and those in the area. We have to take that into consideration as we proceed,” Lt. Katz said at the time.
Intermittent contact with the suspect was made, but his body was found after police heard gun shots inside the home.
Police say he died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Lt. Katz said officers were familiar with the man involved and have responded to a similar incident at the home in July.
The identity of the man will be released after family notification.
