UEA convention canceled this year

Local News

For more than 100 years Utah teachers have gathered each fall for the Utah Education Association (UEA), but this year it won’t be happening.

The UEA Board of Directors have decided to cancel this year’s convention to “focus efforts on critical student needs in Utah public schools as addressed in the Our Schools Now funding initiative”.

They say in recent years they have had decline in attendance.

“Educators cite desire for ‘time off’ from increased teaching demands as a primary reason for not attending the Convention,” the board says.

In fact, a recent  University of Utah Education Policy Center study shows the number one reason teachers are leaving the profession is because of “emotional exhaustion, stress and burnout”.

The UEA says they hope to address these problems by bringing additional resources to the classroom.

The board has not decided what will happen in 2019 and beyond.
