Two Utah High Musical Award winners headed to New York

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (News4Utah) More then 600 students from 24 Utah High Schools took the Eccles Theater Stage Saturday night for the 8th annual Utah High School Musical Theater awards.

The evening showcased 10 production numbers by high schools nominated for best musicals or medleys.

Seventeen judges are sent to Utah high school musicals to score the productions.

Two Utah performers are on their way to New York City. Hillcrest High’s production of Les Miserables won Best Musical and Bennet Chew won Best Actor for his portrayal of Jean Valjean. East High’s Aria Critchley won Best Actress for her role as Jane in East High’s Tarzan.

 In June, Bennet and Aria will represent the state of Utah at the Jimmy Awards in New York City. The two students will experience 10 days of private coaching, master classes and rehearsals with theater professionals.

The education and outreach department of Utah Festival Opera and Musical Theater in Logan sponsors and produces the event each year.

The Utah High School Musical awards recognizes excellence in theater across the state of Utah. This event highlights Utah’s talented students and teacher who shine the brightest.
