A teenager is facing federal charges after he ran a read light, sped away from a UHP Trooper and then crashed and abandoned his vehicle, authorities say.

It started at 5300 South 320 West late just after midnight Wednesday. Lt. Todd Royce with the Utah Highway Patrol said the 17-year-old ran a red light in the area and drove away at a high rate of speed when a state trooper tried to pull him over.

According to Lt. Royce, the trooper decided not to chase the suspect.

“It’s safer not to pursue that vehicle and use our investigative skills to find that person later,” said Royce.

A few minutes later, Royce says the driver crashed the BMW in the intersection of 5300 South and State Street. By the time officers noticed the crash, the suspect had already ran off.

Officers with the State Bureau of Investigation were called to the scene. They tell News4Utah that a firearm and drugs were found in the car.

Lt. Royce says they know who the teenager is because of evidence recovered in the BMW.
