WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (ABC4 Utah) – The former Utah Highway Patrol Captain who made a historic traffic stop in 1975 has died. 
Bob Hayward died Saturday at his home in West Valley City. He was 90 years old. 
Hayward stopped a driver in a suspicious vehicle on August 16, 1975. That driver turned out to be Ted Bundy and was the beginning of the process leading to the execution of one of America’s most notorious serial killers. 
Hayward served on the Utah Highway patrol for 33 years. 
According to his obituary, Hayward leaves behind three daughters, eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
