SALT LAKE CITY (News4Utah)- The fate of three men accused of raping a 9-year-old girl on Easter Sunday in 2016 was determined Wednesday.
Brothers Randall and Jerry Flatlip and Larson Rondeau were acquitted of all charges related to the alleged rape and sodomy of a child. Charges against a fourth man were dismissed.
Last week the now 11-year-old testified she was sleeping on a couch at a friend’s home when the men took her to a back room and raped her. But during opening arguments, the defense claimed the DNA found on the victim didn’t match the defendants. They claim the victim was coached by her mother before going to police.
Earlier in the investigation detectives with the Uintah County Sheriff’s Office learned the girl’s mother was allegedly in the garage smoking meth with her woman friend during the time the alleged rape took place.
The trial was originally scheduled for Vernal but was moved because of too much publicity. It was then moved to Summit County but a mistrial was declared when not enough jurors showed up for jury duty. It was finally moved to Salt Lake City.
*A previous version of this story named all three men brothers. That mistake has since been corrected. Larson Rondeau is not a brother of the other two men.
