WEST VALLEY CITY (News4Utah) – Two women and a three year old cancer patient were struck by bullet fragments at the Smith’s located at 4065 South Redwood Road Wednesday afternoon when West Valley City Police say a man shot himself in the leg.

That man, 36 year old Rufino Cervantes, was later arrested at the Shadowbrook Apartment complex, and taken to the hospital for treatment of his self-inflicted wound.

Las Vegas resident Hugo Padilla, his wife and two small children were leaving this Smith’s at 4065 South Redwood Road at 2 o’clock when Cervantes, whom they had never seen, approached.

“We was coming out and he was passing through the doors and he started shooting, shooting,” Padilla told News4Utah.
His wife, 32 year old Erika Ortega was wounded in the lower leg. She was holding their 3 year old daughter Esmerelda who was wounded in the thigh and the stomach.

“I didn’t see the gun. I just heard the shots and my wife and my daughter start to cry,” Padilla said. “I grabbed my daughter she had a big hole right here and I pull up the shirt and she’s shot right here and she was grabbing her leg and I see there was another hole in her pants and she has another shot right here.”

Making this even more tragic, the Padillas are only here in Utah because Esmerelda is getting treatment for kidney cancer at Primary Children’s Hospital. Hugo worries about her surgery to remove bullets because her blood cell count is already low.

Before it was discovered that Cervantes shot himself, West Valley City Deputy Police Chief Matt Elson called the incident “concerning”.

“It just appears totally random which again is very concerning because you ad I we all go to stores, we all shop, we all do things and we want to feel like we’re safe in our communities,” Deputy Chief Elson said. “This is definitely, you know, something that causes everybody concern.”

Cervantes faces charges of Felony Discharge of a Firearm, Aggravated Assault and Possession of a Firearm by a Restricted Person.

The three victims were released from the hospital Wednesday night.
