Thousands help spruce up Utah communities

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC4 Utah) – More than 3,000 volunteers from 90 local companies are expected to gather throughout Utah to lend a helping hand in their community.

It’s part of United Way of Salt Lake’s annual day of caring.

Each year, for 25 years, volunteers spend nearly 15,000 total hours completing 100 one-day projects throughout Davis, Salt Lake and Summit Counties. The one-day event pairs employees from local corporations and groups with volunteer opportunities in schools and other nonprofits throughout the communities.

Volunteer’s efforts are expected to save the communities more than $640,000 in services.

Here’s a schedule of volunteer efforts throughout the day:

Lincoln Elementary: 

Location: 3225 S. 800 E., South Salt Lake, 84115 

Time: 9:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

Project: Volunteers will be reading with students, giving career presentations, moving the food pantry, and painting a mural for the library. 

South Kearns Elementary: 

Location: 4430 W. 5570 S., Kearns, UT 84118

Project: Volunteers will be participating in STEM projects in each classroom. Activities will vary by grade and class! 

Oquirrh Hills Elementary: 

Location: 5241 S. 4280 W. Kearns, UT 84118 

Time: 9:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. 

Company: Salt Lake Chamber, ViaWest, Wells Fargo Treasury Management, Regence BlueCross BlueShield of Utah, University of Utah Health Medical Group and Office of the Senior Vice President

Project: Volunteers will be doing reading activities in the classrooms and cleaning and updating the garden space. Reading activities connect with the garden and it’s use for the school. 

Copperview Elementary:

Project: Volunteers will be beautifying the school grounds, painting US maps on the playground, and supporting the classrooms and recess/lunch for students 

Catholic Community Services – St. Vincent de Paul:

Project: Volunteers will be cleaning and painting around the dining hall and homeless services center. 

Neighborhood House Association:

Project: Volunteers will help with both indoor and outdoor projects to help maintain and beautify the facilities. 

SSL Community Connection – Savage Project:

Project: Volunteers are laying a gravel driveway, pulling weeds, landscaping the front yard, and removing debris from three homes. 

SSL Community Connection – Rocky Mountain Power Project:

Project: Volunteers will be doing major yard cleanup and trimming of trees/overgrown shrubs 

Kearns High:

Project: Volunteers will be painting around the bleachers on the football field, cleaning up by the softball dugouts, painting in the baseball stadium, replacing the cover on the greenhouse, and providing college/career presentations.
