SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (News4Utah) – On Friday night, thousands of Mormons gathered at the LDS Conference Center to celebrate a milestone in the church.
All worthy males being allowed to hold the priesthood.
It was June 1, 1978 that Dallin H. Oaks — now first counselor in the First Presidency and president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesse’s Christ of Latter-day Saints — heard the news about The Revelation on the Priesthood..
“As I told them that all worthy male members of the church could now be ordained for the priesthood, I wept for joy, “ said Oaks at the LDS Conference Center Friday night.
Thousands of people gathered to commemorate that milestone.
“I know that the church is true and I’ve felt the lord in my life,” said Donna Moncur, a member of the church who lives in New York City but attended the event Friday night.
She says she has mixed feelings about the event.
“I don’t think I would call it a celebration, per se, because I don’t know if we should be celebrating something that never should have happened in the first place,” she said.
Inside the Conference Center, Mormon Gladys Knight — on stage with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir — stirred the crowd.
“The gospel and the church is for everyone, and we just need to make sure that people that look like me or people that don’t look like me feel welcome when they come to church,” said Moncur.
