Local News

5/30/2018 – Overall, more than half of all Americans can’t swim or don’t have all of the basic swimming skills.

A recent Red Cross survey found that 8 out of 10 Americans are planning summer water activities such as going to the beach, pool, water park, boating or fishing this summer.

A third of all Americans plan to swim at a place without a lifeguard.

The Red Cross shared a few safety tips to keep everyone safe around the water.

  • learn to swim and only swim in designated areas ideally supervised by lifeguards.

  • always swim with a buddy; do not allow anyone to swim alone.

  • provide close and constant attention to children and inexperienced swimmers you are supervising in or near the water. avoid distractions while supervising.

  • know how and when to call 9-1-1 or the local emergency number.

The Red Cross is continuing their national campaign to reduce the drowning rate by 50 percent in 50 cities over the next three to five years.  The campaign marks 100 years of swimming safety education for the Red Cross.
