Taylorsville family trying to salvage Christmas after house fire

TAYLORSVILLE (News4Utah) -A Taylorsville family is trying to scrape together some sort of a Christmas for their three children after a fire devastated their home Monday.

“Christmas comes but once a year,” Karlie Badger reads to her three children Jeffrey (11), Katie (9) and Jessica (5).

But for Karlie and Mike Badger and their children, this year’s Christmas is a total loss because the fire in their Taylorsville house destroyed most of their belongings including all of their presents.

“We were holding it pretty well together until we walk into the house and see the Christmas tree and realize what it means for our kids and especially at holiday time,” Mike Badger told News4Utah. “We worked so long to be where we could be into that house and not be able to have Christmas there, it’s rough.”

“It was heart crushing,” Karlie said. “To plan everything and then a few days before Christmas to have everything crashing down. It’s scary. It’s sad. as a parent, you want to give your kids a nice Christmas. Not necessarily extravagant but just to have those few things to go up in flames is really, really hard.”

There’s no place like home for the holidays but the Badgers will not be in their house it has been deemed unsafe to enter or occupy,

“We’re planning, for a year, to be out of there we plan to be out of there while things get rebuilt,” Karlie said.

Now because of a Go Fund Me campaign, friends, neighbors and complete strangers are chipping in to make sure the Badgers have a Christmas after all, raising over $2500 in one day.

“Honestly it’s been hard to focus on the tragedy when there’s been so many people who have gone out of their way to make sure that, that we feel love,” Mike said. “To be honest I think that makes Christmas. That’s what Christmas is about and for my kids to be able to see that I can’t give them that for Christmas. It’s not something you can put in a package.”

For now, the badgers are living with Karlies’s parents in Draper. =
