SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4 News) – A man hospitalized after an altercation at a Salt Lake City hardware store has died.

Salt Lake City police said the man suspected of shoplifting was detained by employees and witnesses outside the ACE Hardware near 600 East 400 South Thursday night.

Police said the suspect suffered injuries that caused him to stop breathing. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Police announced Tuesday evening that man had succumbed to his injuries.

In response to the incident the Ace Hardware store released a statement saying:

“We are saddened by the event that occurred outside our store on the evening of May 2, 2019. The safety of our employees and customers is our highest priority. Based on our knowledge of the facts, we believe our employees acted lawfully after they observed the individual conceal merchandise, exit the store without paying, and then threaten them as well as bystanders with a stolen pry bar. The bystanders involved decided to detain the individual until law enforcement officers arrived on the scene. It was an unfortunate situation for all involved, and we are deeply saddened by the outcome. We offer our condolences and deepest sympathy to the individual’s family and friends.”
