Substitute teacher arrested for alleged sex abuse of students

Local News

CLEARFIELD, Utah (ABC4 Utah)- A substitute teacher at Wasatch Elementary has been arrested after police say he sexually abused three students at the school.

Police say on Sept. 28th they interviewed two of the children. The children told authorities “Mr. Bedel” had touched them inappropriately. During that interview another victim was identified.

62-year-old Mark G. Bedel was arrested at his home in Kaysville. He faces three counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child.

Parents with students at Wasatch Elementary are encouraged to speak with their children and report anything they feel is suspicious.

Some parents like Tyler Deal wondered why the school waited until October 6th to send out a voicemail telling them about it.

“It would have been nice to know,” said Deal. “I don’t think I would have pulled my kids out of school or anything like that, but I would have liked to know.”

Deal said he didn’t know what had happened and thought the voicemail had to do with attendance. He said he never thought about his kids not being safe at school, and was more worried about them outside of class. None of Deal’s two sons were in Bedel’s classroom.

Davis School District says Bedel is no longer an employee with the district:

A substitute teacher by the name of Mark Bedel was arrested Thursday, Sept. 28, by Clearfield Police Department. Mr. Bedel began as a substitute teacher with the school district in March 2016. He is no longer an employee.

We are shocked by the allegations, are taking this matter very seriously and are cooperating fully with investigators.

Parents of the students in the class where Mr. Bedel substituted have personally been contacted by district administrators. Wasatch Elementary School has also sent a phone message to all parents of the school informing them of the arrest.

Anyone who may have further information about the suspect should contact the Clearfield Police Department.
