Students donate hair to cancer patients

PROVO (News4Utah) – In a two-day Share Your Hair event, BYU students line up to donate their hair to Pantene’s Beautiful Lengths program. The public is welcome to attend the free event in the Wilkinson Center February 21-22, 10:30 a.m.-2 p.m.

Jeana Escobar is a nursing student and just finished a semester at the Huntsman Cancer Institute. Her hair reached her hip, but she said her time at the cancer institute inspired her to make the cut.

“The patients are amazing and it really impressed me the way they fight every day. Donating my hair is one little way that I can give back to people in need.” Escobar walked away with a gorgeous shoulder-length do.

Donors get a full consultation with a stylist from BYU’s Studio 1030. Event Director Elise Alford explained, “We donate all the hair to  Pantene’s Beautiful Lengths program and they take the hair and use eight ponytails or so and make a wig and donate them to women with cancer.”

The hair needs to be what they call virgin hair, never bleached or processed, but the restriction doesn’t slow them down. BYU hosts this event twice each year and at each event they generate 60-70 ponytails of hair.

If you’d like to participate in this or a future Share Your Hair event, you can find all of the details on BYU’s Y-Serve website
