LAYTON, Utah (ABC4) – Authorities have released additional details about the 15-year-old girl struck while she was crossing the street near Layton High School early Tuesday morning.

Lt. Riley Richins with the Layton Police Department tells ABC4 the girl was hit at around 7 a.m. while she was crossing the street on Wasatch Drive. The driver got out of their car to help the girl. Police say this is when she was struck by a second vehicle. Layton Police tell ABC4 the girl had to be extricated from under the car.

Authorities have confirmed one of the drivers is a fellow student while the other is a father of a student being dropped off at the school. Both are cooperating with the investigation.

There is no word yet on if she was in the crosswalk or not. It was dark and raining at the time of the crash and police do not believe speed was a factor. Police say the 15-year-old girl is in the hospital in serious condition.

According to Utah Highway Safety Office, there have been 93 pedestrian-involved crashes statewide since October 1st. Of those, 38% occurred while the pedestrian was in a crosswalk. They also tell ABC4 that in 2020, 43% of pedestrians hurt in pedestrian-involved crashes were under the age of 21.

15-year-old hit by two cars outside Layton High in serious condition

LAYTON, Utah (ABC4) – A Layton High School teenager is in serious condition after being struck by a vehicle near the high school early Tuesday morning.

Lt. Riley Richins with the Layton Police Department tells ABC4 the 15-year-old girl was hit at around 7 a.m. while she was crossing the street on Wasatch Drive.

The girl was hit by one vehicle and as the driver got out to help her, police say she was hit by a second vehicle.

ORIGINAL STORY: Student hit by car near Layton High, police close roadway

TUESDAY 11/2/2021 7:53 a.m.

LAYTON, Utah (ABC4) – A Layton High School student has been struck by a vehicle near the school.

Layton Police say the student has been taken to the hospital. Their condition is not yet clear.

Authorities closed northbound Wasatch Drive but have since reopened the roadway.

ABC4 is working to gather additional information and will update this story as details become available.

This comes just a day after 13-year-old Karl Finch passed away in a hospital from injuries he suffered after a car hit him while he was trick-or-treating in Taylorsville. Police say four teenagers had been crossing the street when two of them were struck by a southbound vehicle. The second, a 12-year-old boy, is expected to recover from his injuries.

In late October, an 8-year-old boy was hit by a vehicle while riding his bike in Provo. Police are searching for that suspect.
