SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC4 News) – A man is in critical condition after violently crashing into the Eagle Gate monument in Salt Lake City early Saturday morning.
Salt Lake City Police Department Lt. Mark Buhman said the crash happened just after 1 a.m. when three cars were headed north on State Street at a high rate of speed. Police indicated that it appears the three cars might have been racing.
The road at that intersection changes from three lanes down to two lanes and it is possible the driver was unaware of the upcoming road changes when he made the decision to go around the other cars.
The man crashed into the monument. Firefighters had to extricate the driver from his car before taking him by ambulance in critical condition to the hospital. He is currently in stable condition and expected to survive.
Buhman said at this time in the investigation it is not certain if charges will be filed.
