SALT LAKE CITY (News4Utah) – FanX Salt Lake Comic Convention continued for day two Friday.

One of the stars that flooded the Salt Palace Convention Center was Gaten Matarazzo, who plays Dustin in the hit Netflix series, Stranger Things.

While at the convention, Matarazzo, took some time to raise awareness for cleidocranial dysplasia, (CCD). It’s a birth defect that mostly affects the bones and the teeth.

Matarazzo teamed up with the Utah-based organization, CCD Smiles

CCD Smiles was founded to bring awareness to condition and help those living with it. Dr. Joe Maio with Apex Dental explained often people with CCD must undergo many surgeries during their lifetime that are rarely covered by medical or dental insurance.

Matarazzo said the Stranger Things writers wrote his condition into the show to make Dustin more relatable. He said sharing his experiences through Dustin has brought more light to the condition and brought a lot of people with CCD together.
