Starvation State Park receives new name

DUCHESNE (ABC4 News) – A well-known state park was officially renamed with a special ribbon-cutting ceremony. 

From now on the Starvation State Park will be called the Fred Hayes State Park at Starvation. The park taking Fred Hayes namesake because he served as division director from 2012 until 2018.

Hayes started his career with the Utah Division of Parks and Recreation in 1982 as a seasonal ranger at Starvation State Park.

Between 1982 and 2018 Hayes served in various positions including Ranger, Naturist, Off Highway Vehicle Program Manager, Deputy Director and Director. Under his tenure with Utah State Parks Starvation State Park grew in annual visitors and profitability.

After his passing in 2018, Governor Gary Herbert and the Utah State Legislature passed a resolution to rename the state park: Fred Hayes State Park at Starvation.
