‘Start By Believing’ campaign to help victims of sexual assault

Local News

Salt Lake City Mayor Jackie Biskupski signed a proclamation on Wednesday to encourage local governments and private business organizations around the state to endorse a new campaign.

The new campaign, called “Start By Believing”, is a public awareness program designed to help victims of sexual assault to get the support they need when they report it.

Officials say when victims of sexual assault are believed and supported, they will heal more quickly and completely.

A study conducted by the Utah Commission on Criminal and Juvenile Justice Rape found that one in three Utah women will be sexually assaulted in their life, which is a higher rate than the national average for sexual assault crimes.

The same study found that only 12-percent of sexual assaults in Utah are reported. That’s significantly lower than the national average.
