South Salt Lake Police host crime meeting

SOUTH SALT LAKE, Utah (News4Utah) – According to a national website, South Salt Lake has one of the highest violent crime rates in the nation.

On Wednesday night, News4Utah went to a neighborhood crime meeting to speak with the police about the reasons why.

“We’re not immune from crime,” said Chief Jack Carruth with South Salt Lake Police.

“Violent crime is up nationally — and up across the board in Utah,” he added.

But the numbers, he says — don’t tell the whole story.

The actual population of South Salt Lake is 25,000, says Carruth.

But, during the day, the population booms — with businesses drawing people in, and lots of commuters off of I-80 and I-15.

“A lot of what we deal with is not necessarily South Salt Lake business owners and residents. It’s individuals passing through,” said Carruth.

According to website Neighborhood Scout, South Salt Lake has one of the highest violent crime rates in the nation.

Crimereports.com show that there have been 8 violent crimes in SSL in roughly the last two weeks.

“South Salt Lake kind of gets a bad rap, because of — they claim it to be the crime area,” said resident Geri Cordova.

“But, the fact is — a lot of people watch out for each other,” she added.

“It’s a community.”
