SLC ranks #2 nationwide for package thefts during holidays

Local News

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC4 News) – New analysis from shows Salt Lake ranks second in the country for porch theft during the holiday season.

“We have way too many of them. We have a lot of thefts,” said Sgt. Brandon Shearer with Salt Lake City Police.

Salt Lake Police even recently conducted a sting — with trackers in packages to help catch those committing crimes.

“You never know whether that package you’re stealing is someone’s actual package, or whether it’s one that we’ve set out that we’re watching,” said Shearer.

Here are some tips:

“If you’re leaving valuable items in your car, take them out. If you’re leaving anything in your car that’s visible, take them out,” said Shearer.

Other tips: be home when packages are delivered; have them delivered to your office; and take advantage of services like Amazon Locker.

“This time of year, we definitely see an increase of package thefts because of the holidays,” said Shearer.

“It still happens every day.”
