Simple installation at elementary school helps curb bullying

MAGNA, Utah (ABC4 News) – A new addition at Magna Elementary School had an immediate impact on bullying, according to the Granite School District.

Four ‘Buddy Benches’ throughout the campus are supposed to give students a place to reach out in kindness to others.

When a student is feeling lonely, they can sit on the Buddy Bench and when other students see that, it’s a signal to them to go befriend that person and invite him or her to join their activities.

“The bravest people come and sit on them and the people who want to be friends with them just come and sit next to them then they can be buddies, “said Cael Sandquist, 5th grader at Magna Elementary School.

The school district said they Buddy Benches are possible through a community fundraising effort, combined with support from Exodus Healthcare and Jordan Valley Medical Center.
