PAYSON, Utah (News4Utah) – Three people were injured during a shootout in Payson that spanned two blocks, police say.
According to Chief Brad Bishop with the Payson Police Department, officers were called out to 646 West 500 South at 10:30 p.m. Monday on a shooting in progress. After a preliminary investigation, police believe a man showed up to a home where a husband and wife were at and the two men got into some sort of argument.
“From what we’re gathering, they had an issue earlier in the day, a few hours before this shooting,” said Bishop.
At some point during the argument, police say both men pulled out a pistol and shot 10-15 rounds at each other.
Both men were shot once and were taken to a local hospital and treated for serious but not critical injuries. Chief Bishop did note that one of the men required surgery, but is expected to be OK.
The woman involved in the incident was also shot once. Police say she was taken to a local hospital and treated for minor injuries.
Payson Police say they’re grateful no one else in the area was injured.
“Its a pretty crowded neighborhood. The houses are spread out but we do have a lot of people here; we have a school here, we have a church here, obviously they weren’t in session at the time but the houses are close enough,” Bishop said.
Police are still trying to figure out who opened fire first. Anyone with information is asked to call police.
