GARDEN CITY (News4Utah) – A Garden City sporting goods store is destroyed after a semi-truck barrels through a stop sign and crashes into the side of it.
The terrifying moment was caught on a nearby camera. One of the first witnesses on scene says it sounded like an explosion.
“The building shook, my friend ran past the front window, and leaned in the door and screamed ‘Somebody call 9-1-1!, a truck just hit a building!'” said Chris Kerper, who was across the street when it happened.
Troopers say the 31-year-old Nebraska man who was driving was killed and his passenger was critically injured.
“We got in there and did what we could do. We tried to pull the door open, comfort the man, tell him not to move.”
Minutes after the crash, Pugstone’s owners rushed to the scene. Keri Pugmire, wife of the store owner, says it’s been her husband’s dream since she can remember.
“I remember we were up at Utah state, trying to decide what to do for life, and this is what he wanted to do. He wanted to be an entrepreneur,” said Pugmire.
The investigation into what caused the crash is ongoing, but witnesses say it’s a dangerous intersection.
“The state needs to really look into the dangers of this hill. I’ve had three accidents in 4 years within 150 yards of my home and one of them was a loss of life,” said Kerper.
Clean-up is now underway and owners say the store is a total loss.
