SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (News4Utah) – Scary moments on the freeway in Salt Lake City after a semi truck carrying frozen foods catches fire Friday morning.
News4Utah’s Brittany Johnson was one of the first witnesses on the scene.
Captain Darrin Baum, Salt Lake City Fire, said they were called a tractor trailer that was on fire on the freeway about 7 a.m. under the I-80 overpass on I-15 Southbound around 2300 South. When they arrived, the truck was fully engulfed in flames.
Baum said they are not sure what caused the fire, the driver was able to get out safely. The driver did attempt to extinguish the fire but the flames were just too big.
Baum wants to remind others that if the fire is larger than a garbage can, that an extinguisher most likely would not be effective and to call 911.
Firefighters were able to keep the fire contained to the tractor. Thee is no estimate of damages.
The freeway will continue to experience some delays as crews work to clean up the area.
