Search and rescue looking for elderly overdue hiker in Summit County

SUMMIT COUNTY, Utah (ABC4 Utah)-Search and rescue crews are looking for a 74-year-old overdue hiker in the Wasatch Cache National Forest.

They say 74-year-old Melvin Heaps never returned from a day hike in the Crystal Lake area Monday.

His vehicle was found at the trailhead, but there has been no sign of him.

He is believed to be wearing a red long sleeve shirt with blue jeans and suspenders. He may also have on a straw hat.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Summit County Sheriff’s Office at 435-615-3600 or 435-615-3520.

The Heaps family has released the following statement:

“Our family appreciates all the support we have received from the Search & Rescue units, and the concern and interest of friends and family. We continue to be hopeful because we know Mel and his love of the outdoors. We respectfully ask for privacy at this time – thank you.”
