RIVERTON, Utah (ABC4 News) – A school resource officer was injured during an incident at a Riverton middle school Monday afternoon.

The incident happened just after 2 p.m. at South Hills Middle School located at 13508 South 4000 West in Riverton.

Unified Police Department officials said the resource officer spotted a man behind the school, and he went to confront him to find out what he was doing on the property during school hours.

UPD Sgt. Melody Gray said the man attacked the officer with a piece of wood as the officer was trying to confront him.

“The officer was hit several times with the piece of wood,” said Sgt. Gray.

A female school hall monitor who noticed what was going on radioed for backup.

Another officer responded to the scene, and the suspect was tasered before he was taken into custody. Sgt. Gray said the officer sustained serious injuries to his head and face, but “he will be fine.”

A Jordan School District spokesperson said parents were notified about the incident via email.

Police have only identified the suspect as a 21-year-old man.
