Local News

SALT LAKE COUNTY, Utah (News4Utah) – Salt Lake County Councilman Sam Granato died Thursday, according to a family spokesperson.

“Sam passed away peacefully at home this afternoon surrounded by loved ones,” a statement read.

Granato lost a more than two-year battle with cancer. He served on the Salt Lake County Council since 2013. He also owned and operated a chain of Italian delis and distributed fine foods to numerous restaurants throughout Utah.

The Salt Lake County Council called Granato a true friend to all who knew him.

“Our hearts ache for the loss of a colleague and friend. We will deeply miss his kindness and the thoughtfulness he brought to his life of public service.”

Salt Lake City Mayor Jackie Biskupski released the following statement:

“Throughout my career in public service Sam Granato was one my closest friends, strongest champions, and trusted advisor. Whether Democrat or a Republican, if you were in public service in Salt Lake County, you most likely spent time at Granato’s eating great food and learning from Sam- a man who could connect with people better than anyone.

I will always be grateful that I found my way to Sam and that he chose to bring me into his family. Sam loved an underdog, and supported people who stood on principal-he will be missed by all who knew, and his legacy will be cherished by many more. Rest in peace my dear friend.”

The Utah Democratic Party released the following statement:

“Salt Lake County Councilman Sam Granato was first and foremost, a people person. When you talked to Sam, he made you feel like you were the most important person in the room. Without hesitation, Sam was one of the most beloved elected officials in Utah, in part because everyone was welcome to a meal at his home, Granato Imports. Sam was a bridge-builder in a world of political islands. We express our condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, customers and constituents.”

Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill called Granato an exceptional person and public servant.

“I am, along with many others deeply saddened to learn that Sam Granato, a friend and colleague passed away today. Sam was an exceptional person, devoted family man and principled public servant. I will always remember his genuine kindness, friendship and ability to make you the center of attention in his presence.  Love and prayers to his family for their loss.”
