SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC4 News) – A 23-year-old man has been arrested after police said he sexually assaulted a disabled woman the man was staying with at her Salt Lake City home.
According to arresting documents, Garrett James Otto, 23, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail Wednesday on one count second-degree felony burglary and misdemeanor charges of sexual battery and intentional abuse of a vulnerable adult.
Arresting documents state Otto was staying with an acquaintance in another couple’s home.
A 62-years-old woman who lived at the home had several disabilities which required her to use a wheelchair and a cane and is completely disabled on the left side of her body, documents state.
According to documents, the woman told police she was lying on her bed in her room which is separate from where Otto was staying when Otto entered her room without her permission and climbed on top of her. She then said Otto licked her forehead, nibbled her ear, and groped her breast.
The woman screamed for her husband, who witnessed Otto on top of his wife and pulled him off of her, documents state.
Otto is also a sex offender but stated he chose not to register because he did not want the title of sex offender.
In 2017, Otto was convicted of two counts of third-degree felony unlawful sexual activity with a minor after he met a 15-year-old girl online and had sex with her in a wooded area near Butler Elementary School. Otto pleaded guilty to two reduced charges of class A misdemeanor unlawful sexual activity with a minor.
Otto was given credit for the 132 days he previously served in jail and placed on probation for three years.
In 2018 Otto was convicted of assault after he was arrested for fighting another man in Pioneer Park with a knife, a place he was restricted from being due to his status as a registered sex offender.
Otto was still going through court on the 2018 assault charge at the time of the alleged sexual assault.
