SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC4 News) – A new resolution in the Utah State Senate would amend the Utah Constitution, ridding it of all gender-specific language.

State Sen. Deidre M. Henderson introduced S.J.R. 7 Friday.

It would change the language in the Utah Constitution to be entirely gender neutral. For instance, Article 1, Section 1, which currently reads “All men have the inherent and inalienable right to enjoy and defend their lives and liberties,” would be changed to read “All persons” instead.

In  Article I, Section 12, it will no longer read that a wife cannot be compelled to testify against her husband (or a husband against his wife), rather “a person” cannot be compelled to testify against “the person’s spouse.”

If the resolution proceeds, it will go to Utahns for a vote during the next regular general election.
