WEST JORDAN, Utah (News4Utah) – Close to a thousand citizens have signed a petition asking the Utah Division of Air Quality to get involved as a “foul and unhealthy” odor emanates from the West Jordan Dannon plant.
The plant is located by Mountain View Corridor and 9400 South.
Most neighbors who spoke with News4Utah said they can live with the smell, but residents signed a change.org petition asking DEQ to get involved. News4Utah reached out to DEQ, who said it cannot address problems with odors.
The petition claims citizens have also reached out to the City of West Jordan and the Utah Dept. of Health.
By day’s end Monday, close to a thousand people had signed the petition.
In 2014, Dannon faced similar criticism about foul odors. At that time, a waste water treatment plant had just been constructed on the property. Since then, the City of West Jordan has praised the company for being environmentally conscious, presenting the company with an award for being a good neighbor earlier this year.
The plant began operations nearly two decades ago and makes about three million cups of yogurt per day.
On social media, some criticized petitioners, who they said chose to live near a plant that processes yogurt.
