SALT LAKE CITY (News4Utah)-Right now, the Utah Red Cross is rounding up volunteers to help kick off the “Sound the Alarm” event happening this weekend. Rich Woodruff with the Utah Red Cross, joined Emily Clark, to talk about how you can prepare yourself in the event of a house fire.

Woodruff says their goals is to install 100,000 smoke alarms Across the U.S. in 16 Days. The events here in Utah are set for May 2nd and 12th. Volunteers will install alarms on these days in the greater Salt Lake City area. Woodruff says volunteers are still needed.

In the United States, 3 of every 5 home fire deaths happen in homes that don’t have working smoke alarms. During Sound the Alarm events, Red Cross volunteers and partners will canvass high-risk neighborhoods to install free smoke alarms, replace batteries in existing alarms, and help families create escape plans. These smoke alarm installation events are part of the multi-year Red Cross Home Fire Campaign, launched in 2014 to reduce the number of home fire deaths and injuries in this country.

Woodruff says the campaign is making a difference. Since its launch, 416 lives have been saved.
