Local News

SPRINGDALE, Utah (ABC4) – Authorities are still searching for an overdue hiker who went missing on Sept. 28 in Zion National Park.

79-year-old John Fiske Burg was staying with a group of 50 hikers and was last seen leaving the La Quinta Hotel in Kanab.

He told the group that he may hike the Canyon Overlook Trail after leaving the hotel around 7 a.m. Burg’s vehicle was later found at the trailhead of the Canyon Overlook Trail but he was not there. Authorities do not know when he arrived at the trailhead.

The Canyon Overlook Trail and Pine Creek Canyon remain closed as of Friday evening as the search for Burg continues.

He is described as 5’9″, weighing 220 pounds with brown hair, brown eyes, no facial hair. The national park tweeted that he possibly could’ve been wearing a “little yellow jacket,” a blue Osprey backpack, shorts, a white visor hat with a neck guard, and ankle-high hiking boots. Burg is also known to use two trekking poles that are black and silver in color.
