Police: Suspect in custody after attempting to hit officer with car

Local News

SALT LAKE CITY (News4Utah)- A man accused of attempting to hit an officer is behind bars after a chase and SWAT standoff Thursday morning.

It all started around 2:00 a.m. when officers say they tried to talk to a man who was about to drive a vehicle with stolen plates in the area of 1900 South 200 East.

The driver, now identified as 25-year-old Valentine James Malaki, refused to stop for officers, Det. Robert Ungricht said.

Det. Ungricht said Malaki backed up into a police vehicle and then attempted to swerve and hit an officer before taking off.

Police chased him to an apartment complex at 751 South 300 East.

Valentine bailed out of the car and barricaded himself inside an apartment in the complex, officials said.

A woman who was in the car with Valentine cooperated with investigators. With her help, Det. Ungricht said they were able to identify the man.

Given the fact that Valentine had attempted to hit an officer, SWAT was called to the scene, Ungricht said.

Soon after, Valentine was arrested.

He is being booked into Salt Lake County Jail on charges of aggravated assault on a police officer and fleeing. Det. Ungricth said Valentine had multiple warrants and was known by officers.
