Police shoot and kill man who wielded knife after car chase in West Wendover

WEST WENDOVER, Nevada (ABC4 News)  — Police shot and killed a man Saturday afternoon during a standoff after a brief chase in West Wendover, according to authorities 

The shooting happened at a Chevron gas station on Wendover Boulevard is being investigated by the Elko County Sheriff’s Office.

Elko County Sheriff’s Lt. Kevin McKinney said the incident began after a West Wendover officer saw a black pickup truck driving “recklessly” on Wendover Boulevard around 12:45 p.m.

McKinney said, when the officer tried to pull the truck over, the driver didn’t stop, and a second officer joined the pursuit.

The driver then got out of the vehicle and started running on foot. Police chased him up a hill behind one of the gas station restrooms.

The suspect then wielded a knife at the West Wendover police officers holding him at gunpoint, authorities said. The man raised the knife and began walking toward officers, five shots were fired and the man then fell to the ground.

Police said the man was treated at the scene, but he died from his injuries. No officers were injured during the incident. The man has not yet been identified.

The officers involved are on administrative leave pending the results of an investigation, McKinney said.
