Police recover statue of Brigham Young and Joseph Smith stolen from art studio

[UPDATE] Salt Lake City police say they have recovered the bronze statue stolen from an art studio. Police say the statute was intact and not damaged. They credit good detective work with finding the statue so quickly.

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC4 Utah) – Salt Lake City police are looking for a stolen 800-pound monument of LDS Church Leaders, worth more than $125,000.

“It was quite heavy so we’re surprised that all four people were able to move this statue and make off with it,” said Robert Ungricht, Detective, Salt Lake City Police Department.

Just before 4:00 a.m. Tuesday, police believe four people drove up to a parking lot in the back of 825 North 300 West and stole the brass monument of Brigham Young and Joseph Smith.

“I guess it was easy to see — they were just able to pull up and take it,” said Ungricht.

Good4Utah’s Brittany Johnson spoke to the owner, who did not want to go on camera, and he said the monument was on a loading dock and out of plain site. He said the monument was placed outside of a garage that he was cleaning out and didn’t think anyone would take it.

In the surveillance video, you can see three men and one woman get out of the white Ford Explorer and in less than 10 minutes, load the monument onto a trailer attached to the SUV and drive off.

“We would like to recover this statue before it gets melted or cut down,” Ungricht explained.

Detectives are hoping someone can recognize the suspects before they possibly sell the monument for scrap.

“Once they get it into the machines and melt it down it’s a pretty quick process. It’s just simply burning it down to a fine metal and they pay cash for this type of stuff,” Ungricht told reporters during a press conference Tuesday afternoon. “We’re hoping that we can prevent that from occuring.”

Police say they are looking for three white men and one white woman with blonde hair. They believe one of the men walks with a limp.

If you know anything call Salt Lake City police (801) 799-3000.
