OREM, Utah (ABC4 News) A Utah County man was arrested following a physical altercation with his pregnant girlfriend.
Jett Tumanuvao, 23, was at his girlfriend’s apartment where he lives part-time when the alleged assault happened. Arresting documents show he and his girlfriend, who is two months pregnant, began to argue over questions about the past.
The victim stated to police she ignored him and started to play on her phone when he hit the side of her face while attempting to take her phone away. She went to their bedroom where Tumanuvao’s one-year-old son was taking a nap. Records show he shares custody of the boy with his ex-wife.
The victim said Tumanuvao tackled her to the ground, wrapped his arm around her neck and put her into a headlock, restricting her from breathing for more than 20 seconds. He then reportedly shoved her to the ground and punched the back of her head as he was getting up.
The woman said the baby woke up crying so she consoled him and put him back to sleep. She then left the home and ran to a nearby restaurant where she used their wi-fi to call her family to pick her up. She said she sent Tumanuvao’s ex-wife a text to pick up the boy because of what happened, according to documents.
Police said while speaking to the victim, Tumanuvao continued to message her several times, officers found him walking near the victim’s apartment and stopped him. They said when officers explained that they were investigating an aggravated assault case, they asked him to identify himself and he refused.
He continued to be uncooperative and police warned him that if he did not comply he would be charged with failure to identify, according to records. When officers arrested him he admitted to being the person they were looking for.
Police said a mark on the victim’s neck was consistent with her description of the strangulation.
Records indicate Tumanuvao has been involved in multiple domestic violence cases involving his ex-wife and his girlfriend told police this was not the first time he put his hands on her.
No contact orders were put in place for both the woman and the boy.
Tumanuvao is being charged with domestic violence in the presence of a child, aggravated assault, failure to disclose identity and failure to stop at command of law enforcement.
