OREM, Utah (News4Utah) – A Utah County man is in police custody and faces attempted murder charges after a fight with his roommate.

Mackenzie Ulibarri was booked on charges of attempted murder, assault, domestic violence along with weapons and drug charges.

Orem police officers responded to a home in the area of 700 West 300 South and report of an assault Saturday.

When officers arrived, they found the 27-year-old male victim lying in a large pool of blood. Police said he had been stabbed several times and had a severed ear.

Witnesses said a fight erupted between Ulibarri and his roommate. Ulibarri allegedly got upset because the victim was intoxicated and singing too loudly and would potentially upset the neighbors.

According to the probable cause statement, Ulibarri told police he had taken LSD with the victim before they got into the argument.

Ulibarri grabbed a gun and “fired four rounds to scare away” the roommate, documents state. When it didn’t work, he grabbed a cleaver from the kitchen.

Ulibarri told police he hit the victim with the cleaver multiple times. Investigators would later learn the victim had been stabbed more than 20 times.

Both the victim and Ulibarri were taken to the hospital. Ulibarri suffered a large cut to the hand and other superficial wounds.

The victim survived the attack and doctors were able to sew his ear back on, they say wounds to his arm will cause lifelong loss of function.
