SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC4 News) – A 21-year-old man was arrested after police said he allegedly stabbed his mom’s dog because it was following him around the house.

According to charging documents, Martin Benitez was arrested for animal cruelty and criminal mischief after police responded to a report of an incident on Saturday.

Documents state Benitez told police the dog had been “bothering” him by following him around the house and because he already had a knife out he stabbed the dog when the dog allegedly bit him in the arm.

Officers were unable to locate any injury to the man’s arm. While it is not known the extent of the dog’s injury, police said it appears the dog will survive.

Benitez had a warrant for his arrest for failing to appear on previous charges of theft and failing to stop at the command of an officer that occurred in April 2018. Benitez was on probation for several charges of retail theft and criminal trespassing.
